What Are Dental Veneers?
Dental veneers are thin shells of porcelain or resin that are customized to fit onto the front-facing surface of your teeth. Once in place, they can conceal several common dental flaws, including small chips, noticeable gaps, and permanent discoloration. One of the best parts is that, with proper care and maintenance, you can enjoy the results for 10+ years!
The Process of Getting Veneers
The first step of the entire smile makeover process is scheduling a consultation with Dr. Kyrslyne Thomas so she can determine if you’re a good candidate for veneers. If you are, then she will get to work creating your custom treatment plan and prep your teeth. While your final veneers are being made, she will provide you with a set of temporary ones, allowing you to “test drive” your new smile. Then, once we receive your final veneers and ensure they are perfect, we’ll call you in for your final visit, which is when we will secure them in place.
The Benefits of Veneers
Veneers continue to be loved by patients and dentists alike because:
- They can conceal multiple imperfections
- The size, shape, and shade of each one are customizable
- They can be placed in as little as two visits
- They are crafted from stain-resistant materials
- They can last for 10+ years
Understanding the Cost of Veneers
The cost of your smile makeover will depend on a few things, including how many veneers are needed to achieve the results you desire. For that reason, we can’t provide you with an estimate of the cost online. We can, however, give you a breakdown of the price at your consultation. Then, we can review all of the financial solutions available, including flexible financing with CareCredit.
Veneers FAQs
What Happens to the Teeth Under Veneers?
You can rest assured that veneers won’t harm your teeth. Still, the treated areas are irreversibly changed by the treatment process.
A dentist has to “prepare” your teeth before you can get veneers. More specifically, they must remove bits of enamel to ensure the shells adhere and blend seamlessly. The result is that the treatment sites will always need veneers (or similar restorations) going forward. Without them, your treated teeth will face an increased risk of cavities and tooth sensitivity.
All that said, even “veneered” teeth can still face oral problems. You should thus protect them with good oral hygiene – twice-daily brushing, once-daily flossing, frequent mouth rinses, etc.
How Long Do Veneers Last?
Veneers are one of the longer-lasting cosmetic dental treatments. In a best-case scenario, they can enhance your grin’s good looks for several decades or more.
Scientific research bears these truths out. For example, a 2012 study published by the International Journal of Prosthodontics and Restorative Dentistry noted veneers’ varying lifespans. It noted that 95% of 318 placed shells lasted 5 years, 94% lasted 10 years, and 83% lasted 20 years.
Of course, how long your own veneers last will depend on you. Averages one work for 10-15 years, while well-maintained ones endure for 30 years or more. You should thus protect your veneers by practicing good oral hygiene, avoiding bad oral habits, and getting regular dental checkups.
Do Veneers Change Your Face?
Veneers do change your face once placed, but this isn’t a bad thing. The effect is positive and further improves your appearance.
You see, your mouth’s muscles decline with age. Getting older makes them lose elasticity and tone, resulting in saggy skin, wrinkles, and lines. Veneers counter these effects by supporting your mouth’s musculature and accentuating your cheekbones. By doing so, they basically provide the benefits of a facelift without any surgery.
If you’d like, your dentist can explain how veneers will affect your face’s shape. Just set up a consultation to get the relevant details.
Is There Anyone Who Shouldn’t Get Veneers?
Almost anyone with decent oral health can qualify for veneers. Therefore, the only ones who shouldn’t get them are people with pre-existing dental issues.
For instance, a patient with cavities should reconsider their veneer work. Putting porcelain shells on decayed teeth will only make their damage harder to detect. If that happens, the cavities will worsen and become more challenging to treat.
Gum disease is another disqualifier for veneer treatment. After all, dental impressions won’t come out right (and shells won’t fit properly) if you have bleeding and swollen gums. Gum recession from your infection could also reveal the margin of your veneers.
